Random Act of Cyclamen

I have been looking through all of my old drafts, in the back end of my wordpress site, as I get back into writing the blog on a more regular basis.  I found these Cyclamen.  Cyclamen are favorites of mine, my mother always had some growing in the house, along with african violets.  She is great with them.  These were Mid-Wilshire, on a storefront that had been defunct for years.  Not sure who made the sticker on the top left….

I am always so impressed with those who blog regularly.  I seem to get caught up in the painting of things… but I am determined.  I have sorted out the wordpress app on my phone and hope to be uploading more regularly.

Have a great weekend.

Street Art Flowers for Muse on 8th

daisy on sm 2009 a LaHue

In the early summer of 2010, I was on my way out of town for the second Cross Country Random Act of Flower Journey.  As I was painting a daisy and butterfly on Santa Monica, Jennifer popped out of the cafe across the street, Muse, and offered me a sandwich and some ice tea for the road.  We’ve been friends ever since.

It took about a year for me to make it back to Los Angeles, and in 2012 Muse moved from the Theater District on Santa Monica, to La Brea and 8th, where it remains a neighborhood treasure of vegetarian delights and creatives coming together. Museon8th.com

For the next three months, June-August, I will have some Street Art Flower paintings showing in the cafe, to my delight.

We will be having a small, friendly artist reception on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, from 7-9pm, with 20 one of a kind block prints for those arriving first.

If you are in Los Angeles, I look forward to seeing you there.

Muse on 8th is located at

759 South La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, California 90036

Matilija Poppy’s Legend

Matilija poppy Andrea LaHue

These are some of the most stunning native California flowers.  They are so hardy, they remind me of the “poppy” families version of a sunflower.  They are giant “feel good” blossoms.  I first really took them in, on a walk with an artist friend of mine, James “Jimmy” Hayward.  He spoke of an American Indian Legend that explained why these flowers grew best on a western incline near a river bed, where they would get the afternoon sun.  In his story, told over 10 years ago, I recall an Indian chief loosing his daughter on the river’s edge, and Matilija Poppy‘s grew in the footprints she left behind.

In my line of work, I hear many memories of flowers, often people have family flower stories that weave an event into a families oral history.  I have always been conscious of these stories in my family history.

I found a couple of other stories on-line about Matilija, this one seems closest to the original one I heard.

“It is Amatil who laughs and beckons to you”,  said our guide.   “Who was she,” we asked,  “Some Mexican senorita that used to dwell here?”

“No,  senors,  it was before the days of the Mexicans – ages ago, when Indians roved these hills.   Her father was a great chief and very proud of his little daughter.   But an enemy stole her from the canyon and she was never seen again. She grew up among strangers far away.”

Matilija Poppy Wildflowers of California 1921

“Her story was brought to the old chief,  years after,  by a wanderer from another tribe,  saying that she pined away and died,  but that she promised that her spirit would come back to the canyon to sing for him again.

“He used to sit alone by the stream to listen for her laughing voice,  and the Indians called its waters ever after ‘Am atil haha’.   The Spaniards have only changed the name a little, so it is ‘Matilija’,  and up there you see the Sleeping Chieftain who still hears her happy laughter in his dreams.”

Press Release

“AMERICANA” by Random Act aka Andrea LaHue

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

December 1, 2012 LA, CA – On December 13,, 2012, LAB ART, the nation’s largest art gallery dedicated to Street Art, presents the premier solo exhibit of celebrated Los Angeles street artist Random Act a.k.a. Andrea LaHue.

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Los Angeles, CA, December 1, 2012:  On December 13, 2012 LAB ART, the Nation’s largest art gallery dedicated to Street Art, proudly presents “AMERICANA”, the premier solo exhibit of celebrated Los Angeles artist Random Act a.k.a. Andrea LaHue, after her unprecedented cross country expeditions of social activism. “AMERICANA” is a timely, relevant visual passage crisscrossing a deeply layered America. This exposition is inspired by LaHue’s journeys across a changed “United States”, in the midst of a war and recession and her experience of painting enormous flowers on buildings in 51 cities “from sea to shining sea”.

In “AMERICANA” Random Act illuminates resonant themes of the American psyche.  Random Act takes the audience on a dynamic journey through iconic images such as Abraham Lincoln, Gil Scott-Heron and Woody Guthrie. Including their writing, relevant maps, icons and images from her journey, LaHue skillfully creates an entirely unique style that flows through the entire exhibition.

“I wanted to crash together the American experience, dream and psyche and liberate it.”
– Random Act aka Andrea LaHue

Deepening the experience and reflecting the cooperation within a vibrant culture, “AMERICANA” also features Random Act collaborations with artists such as Bryan Snyder and Lydia Emily.

Punctuating the evening, actors Kevin Will and Will Dixon will perform The Gettysburg Address written by Abraham Lincoln and The Revolution Will Not Be Televised written by Gil Scott-Heron, at 8pm and 9pm, respectively.

The opening event will feature  “Americana” inspired DJ sets from Buzz Can’t DJ and DJ TY.

Random Act is widely recognized for monumental botanical paintings and her extraordinary journeys to “uplift, beautify and inspire” main streets across America. The exhibit is a stylistic evolution – a deeper exploration of American iconography layered in paint, portraiture and transfers. Her innovative blend of fine art and street art celebrates American ingenuity and redemption. “AMERICANA” presents the first opportunity to see Random Act’s timely visual reflections assembled together in one exhibit.

“we found it”

Random Act Tulip and Parker as taken by Patti, after finding it around the corner. x
Random Act and Parker as captured by Patti McAllister Renick

Yesterday I was out in Altadena California and found a perfect spot for a Random Act on my way out of town.  A Tulip for my friend Patti.  Altadena was my 49th City and I wrote about it yesterday on my other blog. http://crosscountryrandomactsofflowers.blogspot.com/

Patti and I have been friends for years and share the love for a poem my grandfather told me when I asked him what his favorite flower was, he said:

Tulips in the garden,
Tulips in the park,
the kind of Tulips I like
are Tulips in the Dark.”

Patti shared this poem with her sons as they grew up.

This morning, when I received this picture and the caption “We found it!”, it made my day.  Then, as I write this blog, I realize something special has come full circle.
